Cairo – Garbage

Once upon a time there was a city that was neat and tidy. Once upon a time only 12 million people lived there. Today Cairo has a population estimated at 20 million and their garbage piles up in the streets. Nobody can keep up with the speed at which the city is growing. Everyone in Cairo has his views on garbage but nobody knows what to do about it. We meet the restaurant owner losing his customers because the pavement outside his establishment is covered in garbage. We follow a family in a garbage village, sorting out garbage, trying to use everything in order to save money for their son’s wedding.  You will meet the Italian garbage disposal operators brought in to get to grips with the sheer amount of garbage and to teach the city dwellers good garbage habits.

We discover how difficult it is just to change the habits of the inhabitants in one street in Cairo, and we can imagine how challenging it is to change the habits of one of the worlds biggest cities.

Cairo – Garbage is a portrait of the Cairo community as seen through its garbage.
